Every year the State of Kentucky implements what is known as "Fire Season" from February 15th - April 30th & October 1st - December 15th. The recommended life of a smoke detector is 10 years from the manufacture date, to check simply remove the device from the wall or ceiling and check the sticker on the back.
Remember to check the gauge on your fire extinguishers to ensure they are sufficiently charged and follow manufacturer recommendations on when to replace.
